Computer Program Models Human-like Problem Solving

We, human, even when using a tool like math, follow certain pattern in solving problems, particularly mathematical sequence problems. Researchers at University of Gothenburg (Sweden) have created a computer program that models human-like problem solving.

The most common math computer programs, according to a press release by the University of Gothenburg, score below 100 on IQ tests with number sequences. And this was main reason of why they try to design ‘smarter’ computer programs.

“We’re trying to make programmes that can discover the same types of patterns that humans can see,” said Claes Strannegard, researcher at the Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, as cited on the release.

The researchers believe that “number sequence problems are only partly a matter of mathematics – psychology is important too.” The group is therefore using a psychological model of human patterns in their computer program, the release reveals.

“They have integrated a mathematical model that models human-like problem solving. The programme that solves progressive matrices scores IQ 100 and has the unique ability of being able to solve the problems without having access to any response alternatives. The group has improved the programme that specialises in number sequences to the point where it is now able to ace the tests, implying an IQ of at least 150.”

Their computer programs beat conventional math programs since it combines mathematics and psychology. It is claimed to having the potential of identifying patterns in any data with psychological component—such as financial data, but not in more science-type data, Strannegard says.
